He's not supposed to be showing it. I wanted his face to be expressionless and bleak for the most part... thoughtful, but not much other than that. It is possible to be in a great amount of pain and not show it externally. Especially if it is so great that it has reached the point of numbness. Once it's gotten to that point, the blood is a sort of shocker that can bring one back to reality...or lead you farther from it.

Forgot to finish my thought here... The young wolf has allowed himself to be enveloped by the numbness to escape the sudden and immense pain that he has now got to deal with, and the sight of his own blood stands out brightly to him as solid evidence that he is still in fact a living, breathing being even though he's too numb to feel it. A bit of a chasing circle here. It can only be stopped by willfully laying down the barrier of numbness and going up to face the pain directly.
The older, wiser wolf has been there before and, seeing the vicious circle, understands that though pain hurts, and it feels good to numb it by running away mentally, the numbing process is one that can put one into a bit of a stupor that seizes hold of one's mind and the sight of one's own blood is only a momentary escape from it. At the same time that one is assured that he is indeed alive, the life-blood is leaking out and if done often enough, he may bleed himself to death; therefore, completely destroying the issue he was trying to "remedy" in the first place. And so, I guess the main point here is that running from your problems only creates larger ones.
Sorry for the long winded comment. I've honestly been trying and trying to put into words the feelings that I was trying to get across in this picture and your comment was the best thing that could have happened to trigger the thought process.
